Sources
Begat is built entirely from openly licensed data and public-domain texts. This page credits each source, gives its licence, and says what Begat takes from it. How the data is turned into the facts on each page is set out on the methods page.
Data
| Source | Licence | What Begat uses |
|---|---|---|
| Theographic Bible Metadata, by Robert Rouse | CC BY-SA 4.0 | People, places, and events, their family links, the verses each is tagged in, the years, and the traditional writers |
| OpenBible.info Bible Geocoding | CC BY 4.0 | Place identifications, their scores, map points, and modern names |
| Natural Earth | public domain | Coastlines, rivers, and lakes on the maps, and the shaded relief under them (the 1:50m SR_50M raster, cropped and reprojected by tools/make_relief.py) |
| OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors | ODbL | Map points for some places, via OpenBible. A page that draws one credits OpenStreetMap in its sources |
| Easton’s Bible Dictionary, by M. G. Easton (1897) | public domain | The biographies and the full dictionary entries |
Data derived from Theographic is shared under the same licence, CC BY-SA 4.0. The family trees, timelines, and verse lists on Begat are such derivatives, and you may reuse them on the same terms. Theographic’s data was changed for Begat in the ways the methods page describes: the man Jacob is filed as Jacob rather than Israel, references to a nation are split from its ancestor, all-lowercase aliases (common words such as “mother”) are dropped, and so are some aliases of the divine entries. A few people’s dictionary entries are re-pointed to Easton’s article about the person rather than about one of their other names (Daniel, not Belteshazzar; the full list is on the methods page).
Bible texts
| Text | Licence |
|---|---|
| Berean Standard Bible (BSB) | public domain |
| King James Version (KJV), 1769 Cambridge edition | public domain |
| American Standard Version (ASV), 1901 | public domain |
Chronology
The years follow Floyd Nolen Jones, The Chronology of the Old Testament: A Return to the Basics (Green Forest, AR: Master Books), as recorded in Theographic. They are labelled “traditional (Jones)” wherever they appear. Begat uses the years as data and reproduces none of the book’s text.
Theographic’s own sources
Theographic asks those who publish work built on it to credit the sources it draws on. For the parts of Theographic that Begat uses, those are:
- STEPBible, TIPNR – Translators Individualised Proper Names with all References, CC BY 4.0, used by Theographic to identify individuals and tag verses.
- Marshall Genealogy and Complete Bible Genealogy, used by Theographic to identify family relationships.
- Floyd Nolen Jones, The Chronology of the Old Testament, the basis of the birth, death, and event years. Todd Atwood’s timelines of Acts supply the dates of events in Acts. R. A. Torrey’s Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (1880), after James Ussher’s Annals of the World (1650–54), supplies the verse years.
- M. G. Easton, Easton’s Bible Dictionary (1897), from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library edition.
- The King James Version, 1769 Cambridge edition.
- OpenBible.info Bible Geocoding.
STEPBible
STEPBible TIPNR (Translators Individualised Proper Names with all References), by STEPBible.org, based on work at Tyndale House, Cambridge, is licensed CC BY 4.0. Begat has downloaded it for a later phase, and no TIPNR data is yet shown on any page. STEPBible asks for a link and a record of changes made to its data, kept here:
Changes to STEPBible data, as of 2026-10-15: none. No TIPNR data is yet on a page.
